Advantages and disadvantages of using different processes to produce copper-aluminum clad plates

Apr 01, 2022

After decades of research and practice by scholars, many scientific research achievements have been made in the production methods of copper-aluminum composite materials. Each process has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages and disadvantages of copper-aluminum composite plates of different processes are described as follows:

1. Cold-rolled composite process (plate, strip): use polymer materials (glue) to bond two metals together. Its advantages are: simple process, easy mass production

Its disadvantages are:

1)It is not resistant to high temperature, and the universal glue (epoxy resin) between metals cannot be heated, and the layer will be opened below 230 degree .

2)The glue is not uniform, and the phenomenon of bubbling and peeling is easy to occur.

3)Short life, epoxy resin is a chemical product, it will age after a period of use, and it is easy to peel off and delaminate.

4)The composite strength is low, and the product cannot be further processed by subsequent rolling, bending, cutting, stamping, etc.

2. Hot-rolled composite process (plate, strip): The surface of two metal materials is roughened, the billet is heated by an induction furnace online, and then rolled and composited by a small rolling mill, and the energy conversion generated by rolling is used to make the two metals composite. together.

Its disadvantages:

1)The bonding strength is low and cannot meet its electrical conductivity requirements

2)Can't fold right angle

3. Copper plating process: The copper plating surface treatment is applied to the metal through a chemical reaction! The copper plating process on different materials will be different. The copper plating on iron parts must go through chemical degreasing, electrolytic degreasing, pre-plating of nickel or copper, thickening of copper sulfate, and post-processing. In stainless steel plating, the surface copper thickness is generally 30µm-40µm, can not be used in the conductive industry, is easy to damage, not easy to repair.

4. Solid-liquid (casting) composite process: inject aluminum water into the copper tube, and control the product specifications through the stretching machine.

Advantage:

1)All-inclusive composite, beautiful appearance, no leakage of aluminum

2)The production period is short, the product specifications are single, and a large amount of stock can be reserved.

Disadvantage:

1)The product cannot be fully filled when it solidifies and shrinks in the copper mold, forming a thicker eutectic layer, and cannot continue rolling to form a relatively thin strip product.

2)Affected by the eutectic layer (the eutectic layer is Al2O3 is brittle) the bonding strength is low. Therefore, the bending angle is more than 2 times the R angle, the traditional copper bar bending process cannot be used, and the copper layer is prone to fracture.

3)The row of the casting process is 150mm wide and 6m long. The surface of the copper layer is the as-cast structure, and there are some microstructure defects such as pores and inclusions.

5. Explosive compounding, production process: it uses explosives as energy. After the explosives between the copper plate and the aluminum plate are detonated, they transform into stable detonation through self-acceleration and move forward at a certain speed. The detonation product collides with the aluminum plate at an angle under the action of pressure, thereby achieving a metallurgical bond between the substrate and the composite. Explosive recombination can be achieved in the anaerobic state. Can't do thin plates.

Advantage:

1)This composite method has high bonding strength, not limited to the composite between copper and aluminum, and can be arbitrarily combined between two or more metals

2)The width can be unlimited, and the ratio of copper and aluminum can be adjusted within a large range.

Disadvantage:

1)Due to the difference in the detonation position, spacing, charge form, and the propagation mode of the detonation wave, it is easy to reduce the recombination rate, it is easy to produce over-melting at the interface, and it is difficult to achieve the recombination rate and unevenness required by the technical requirements. Produces higher weld quality.

2)Flaw detection, follow-up repair welding, and milling and punching on a milling machine are required between the composite plates. The process is complicated and the cost is high, and thin plates or strips cannot be produced.
